Our 30 Years Anniversary, What a Celebration!
Tuesday, 26 October 2010 16:34

First of all we would like to take the chance of thanking everybody who came to celebrate our 30 years anniversary with us! It was a wonderful evening for our guests, staff, management, owners, and everybody else who carries a warm heart to Buddy Dive. Without so many Buddy Dive “ambassadors” this party would not have been such a great success!

In 30 years Buddy Dive of course a lot happened and changed. Most people will remember the annexation of former Lions Dive Resort, the opening of the new Poolbar, and the arrival of the new boats and vehicles. These are just a few examples that can be mentioned. Yet the biggest change in “Buddy Dive History” was announced during the anniversary party; Two Buddy Dive Liveaboard yachts will start sailing the Galapagos Islands as from September 2011.

During General Manager Paul Coolen’s speech, accompanied by a slide show with pictures from the past and present, the focus of the speech changed from the past, to present, to the future… “And now please have a look at the screen”, were Paul’s last words of his speech. Everybody looked up and a multi colored logo, that is familiar to most divers, appeared on the big screen. However, it looked odd… Instead of the words “Buddy Dive Resort Bonaire” the words “Buddy Dive Liveaboard Galapagos” were placed in the logo. The crowd was somehow confused. The words, the logo, it was difficult to place. Luckily a few second later everybody was taken out of their confusion when the screen showed a rendering picture of the liveaboard yachts to be build. With the projection of the yachts in their eyes all guests looked at the screen with amazement. Everybody understood: Buddy Dive Goes Liveaboard! The anniversary party was the perfect moment to release this exiting piece of news!

The announcement of the new liveaboards was not the only thing that got attention during the evening. We received a lot of pictures that were sent by people who entered the Buddy Dive Photo Contest. Although it was hard to pick the winners we made it to select the lucky ones and called them up stage to honor them and handover the prizes.

After all it was a very successful evening! We already look forward to the next Anniversary party to come.

Ned & Anna DeLoach at Buddy Dive for the 7th Consecutive Year!
Tuesday, 26 October 2010 16:33

It was quite hard for our guests not to run into Ned and Anna DeLoach, world-renowned naturalists and marine life authors, during the most of the month September at Buddy Dive Resort. Every day you could see them spending time with our guests explaining how certain fish behave, where to spot the smallest sea horses, or teaching about coral’s function within our reef.

It’s amazing to see how passionately they talk about our magnificent ocean and the creatures that  live there. This is exactly the reason why people like to spend their diving holiday in September at Buddy Dive Bonaire!

Ned and Anna DeLoach visited Buddy Dive Resort for their seventh consecutive year, hosting the Summer Marine Life Education Program. During this one-month event, Ned and Anna gave presentations with slide shows on fish behavior and coral, fish and reef identification. On Fridays, during the weekly Manager’s Rum Punch Party, they were happy to sign their books for those who wanted to bring it home a great reminder of their holiday.

Ned and Anna guided boat dive trips and tours through Bonaire’s mangrove area, the nursery of the reef. Ned and Anna guided a night dive during the coral spawning. This is a highlight of the program.  This year it was predicted that the coral was only going to spawn twice. Divers didn’t want to miss one of the occasions that Mother Nature was putting on a nightly show. Having Ned and Anna here to teach and guide divers during the spawning made this experience even more special.

Buddy Dive Resort would like to thank Ned and Anna DeLoach for all their time and effort they have put into this program and for again another wonderful time together on Bonaire! We are also very happy to announce that next year Ned & Anna again will stay with us again hosting this special Summer Marine Life Education Program. We look very much forward to welcoming them back at Buddy Dive Resort for their eight consecutive year!

Kids Sea Camp 2010
Monday, 20 September 2010 14:43

This years' Kids Sea Camp was two weeks back to back of fun for kids, teens and their parents! Buddy Dive Resort has been hosting the Kids Sea Camp program for 5 years in a row, and we are happy to know it was again a great success. Kids get the opportunity to experience the wonderful island environment either by land or water activities, while parents get to enjoy diving and/or relaxing.

The Kids Sea Camp program runs from Sunday-Friday, and during that time many exciting things can happen to kids; like a PADI Open Water Certification or Junior Open Water Certification or becoming a PADI SEAL member!  This year, Buddy Dive Instructors certified 18 kids, adding 18 more divers to the world’s population. Some Advanced Open Water students were made during the week also. For the kids too young for certification, they learned skills in the pools on site, and then got a chance to experience a real dive, thus earning them a place on the PADI Seal Team. Diving and snorkeling activities played a big role with these kids while here at Buddy Dive Resort, but they also went tubing, sunset sailing, kayaking, site seeing and even went to pay the donkeys a visit at the Donkey Sanctuary.

With all these things accomplished, no wonder it was a success. Kids Sea Camp at Buddy Dive Resort is really a special time for families and we are happy to have helped make their vacation memorable and fun.

Dr. Eugenie Clark at Buddy Dive Resort
Thursday, 16 September 2010 19:14

Thursday evening August 26th, Buddy Dive Resort and guests welcomed Dr. Eugenie Clark, alias “The Shark Lady”, a world-renowned ichthyologist and authority on sharks.  Dr Clark gave a presentation at The Poolbar entitled “Sea Monsters I Have Known”.

Now retired from teaching, Dr. Clark joined the faculty in 1968 at the Department of Biology, University of Maryland, College Park, where she still holds the title of Senior Research Scientist and Professor Emerita. She currently conducts her research at the Center for Shark Research at the Mote Marine Laboratory, where her title is Senior Research Scientist and Founding Director.

She has held positions as a research assistant at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, at the New York Zoological Society, and at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. She was the founding director (1955 to 1967) of the Cape Haze Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Florida, now a leading center for shark research called the Mote Marine Laboratory with which she is still affiliated.

Dr. Clark is the recipient of three honorary D.Sc. degrees and numerous awards from the National Geographic Society, the Explorers Club, the Underwater Society of America, the American Littoral Society, the Gold Medal Award of the Society of Women Geographers, and the President's Medal of the University of Maryland. She has authored three books and over 160 scientific and popular articles.

She has conducted 71 deep submersible dives. Her latest research projects concern the behavior of tropical sand fishes and deep sea sharks. These studies have been featured in 12 articles she has written for National Geographic magazine.

All these experiences led to a very interesting photo presentation about underwater creatures that most people had never seen before. The presentation was well attended as our guests quietly enjoyed the stories told by the 88 year old shark expert. Afterwards, Dr Clark signed copies of one of her books, “The Lady and the Sharks”.

Last, but not least, we would like to congratulate Dr. Eugenie Clark who received the second Bonaire Lifetime Achievement Award, which was presented to her by Bonaire's Lt. Governor, Dr. Glenn A.E. Thodé. Dr. Sylvia Earle received the award last year. We already look forward to welcome next year’s award winner to host another presentation at Buddy Dive Resort.
